The world’s largest organ is in Altantic City, New Jersey Convention Hall.
It has two different consoles of 7 and 5 manual keyboards.
A total of 225.000 wood planks was necessary for its construction. The metal pipes are made out of an alloyage of led, zinc and copper tuned to the proper tone.
The organ’s weight is of approximately 150 metric tons.
There are 455 registers, the number of registers varies from 32 for the pedal, from 61 to 121 for the manuals.
There are 14 percussions including small bells, harp, xylophone and grand piano. For the very large number of stops it contains, a special electric control system had to be invented to control all of them, such as most distant of keyboards, combinations, transmitters and pneumatic actions.
Over 4 years were necessary for over 100 pipe organ specialists to complete this gigantic project…
In addition to the console keyboards there are 12 auxiliary removable keyboards tied with electric cables and placed in different sections ot the organ. These keyboards are used for tuning and for general organ maintenance.
The electric cables connecting the console with the tansmitters and wind-chests are equivalent to five times and a half the distance around the world at the Equator. There are 221 237,5 kilometers of electric cables.
Some of the largest pipes in that organ have been built right in the hall.
The organ’s largest pipe is also the world’s largest pipes, the 64’ Diaphone Profunda.
The organ also has ten 32’ pipes.
A complete tour of the organ would take you 4 ½ hours.
The 30 tremulants are adjustable at variable speeds by the organist.
In 1929 the main organ’s cost was insignificant. 400.000 US Dollars (2.600.000 French Francs) but today it could not be built for less than 1.450.000 US Dollars (9.425.000 French Francs).
